Collinder 316 is 1.75 degrees and within it is Trumpler 24, at 1 degree. Stretching from the very bright and much smaler NGC6231 is a line of stars leading to an apparant Y-junction each branch leading to separate concentrations of stars; one elongated and one more compressed. NGC6231 is to the west, the elongated group south and and the compressed group north. The region is quite rich and stunning.

I feel I could see it as a 'blinking star'. Higher power seemed to show a tenuous disc around the central star. It didn't disappear with the UHC filter.[Also Belanglo July 14 2007: Solid non-stellar disk with the hint of an outer halo]
